What is your impression of the loner?

I feel that the loner is a boy who is anti-social and a rather quiet boy. He does not seem to be trying to make new friends despite his desire to do so. He also seems to be very different than the children playing in the playground that are very lively and cheerful in their little groups. Instead, he just leans on the playground wall doing bored tricks to entertain himself such as "smacking his hands against the bricks", "tracing patterns with his feet" and scuffing them to make the tarmac squeak" and many more to entertain himself from getting too bored. Being timid, he "leans on the playground wall"all day "keeping a look-out" for the people in the playground. He comes to the playground often probably wishing for the day when a kind soul comes and asks him to play with him or her so that the boy would not be someone with nobody to talk to. The phrase "His loneness is his shell and shield" tells me that he is probably too shy or have this phobia of conversing with people. Perhaps, this is why he is never found playing happily with the children in the playground. Most probably the scrawls "watch this space" was written by the boy himself. This tells me that he will be back one day. All we know is that the boy is an exceptionally lonely one probably because the lack of presence of his parents and that he may never change. Or will he?

What is your impression of the children?

They seem to be enjoying themselves in the playground in their own cliques unlike the loner who has no one to talk to. They seem to lit up the playground with their "shouting, laughter and song". They are also very aware of the presence of the loner because they" pass him running, skipping, walking" "in slow huddled groups, low talking" and "never speak". This implies that the children do gossip about the loner. My guess is that they are curious about the loner but do not have the initiative to invite him to play along with them. Perhaps, they do not accept the loner and do not want him to be their friend or fear that they will be classed as loners too if they accepted the loner as a friend to play with.
